  2. 1086 by officials of William the Conqueror in
  3. order to assess land tax and other dues,
  4. ascertain the value of the crown lands, and
  5. enable the king to estimate the power of his
  6. vassal barons. Northumberland and Durham were
  7. omitted, and also London, Winchester, and
  8. certain other towns. The Domesday Book is
  9. preserved in two volumes at the Public Record
  10. Office, London. The name is derived from the
  11. belief that its judgement was as final as
  12. that of Doomsday.
